FORMER Yorkshire Coast’s Got Talent winner Leanne Burton is now just one step away from performing live on stage at London’s O2 arena.
Bridlington based singer-songwriter Leanne, 23, wowed the crowd and judging panel at the Open Mic UK Regional Showcase held at the Manchester Palace Theatre and the next stop will be Dewsbury Town Hall later next month where she will compete in the area finals.
And if successful at the next round Leanne will go through to the National Grand Final which will be held at the O2 arena, in London on January 19 next year.
Thousands of acts entered Open Mic UK 2012 - a national talent competition searching for the best singer-songwriters, rappers and vocalists of all genres who perform either covers or original material.
Leanne was one of 20 acts who took to the stage at the regional final, and was chosen by the judges as one of three to proceed through to the next round, much to her disbelief.
“It was quite tough because I listened to the sound checks and I just thought there’s not a chance that I will get through so I thought I’m just going to enjoy it anyway. When I got through I couldn’t believe it,” said Leanne, who works full-time as a primary school teacher and performs gigs locally in her spare time.
And the prospect of performing at such a prominent venue as the 02 arena is something which Leanne, who taught herself to play guitar just two years ago, is really excited about.
“I can’t wait for the next round, I’m so excited. It’s amazing,” she added.
The overall winner of the competition will have the chance to grab a breakthrough recording contract and the chance to tour the UK.
Previous winners include Hatty Keane who has performed alongside Ed Sheeran and Tinchy Stryder as well as Birdy, who won the competition at the age of 12 back in 2008 and has gone on to enjoy success including recording a song with Mumford and Sons for the soundtrack of Disney Pixar film Brave.
