A Bridlington businessman is fighting for his life in hospital after being attacked on a night out.

Ian Brodie was said to be celebrating his 50th birthday in Scarborough on Saturday when he was attacked in Somerset Terrace at around 11pm.

Mr Brodie, who owns The Cobblers shop in Chapel Street, was still in a critical condition in Hull Royal Infirmary when we went to press.

Ryan Dayle Tranmer, 22, of Thornton Road, Bridlington, has been charged with inflicting grievous bodily harm.

He pleaded not guilty to the charge at Scarborough Magistrates Court on Monday, and will be remanded in custody until his next court appearance on May 8.
