WORK to strengthen a weak bridge could mean traffic delays for drivers during the next eleven weeks.
Single file traffic light controls were put in place in Springfield Avenue at the entrance to Palace car park, controlling traffic between there and the junction with Hilderthorpe Road over the bridge which spans the Gypsey Race at that point.
They are expected to be in place for differing lengths of time until the bridgework is completed toward the end of March. It is not thought the road will have to be completely closed.
John Lister, head of Bridlington Renaissance, said the work was necessary to bring the concrete bridge up to present standards.
“There is no danger it is likely to collapse. It has been identified as a “weak” bridge in need of attention and strengthening to bring it in line with modern load bearing requirements. The work will mainly involve improving what is basically a concrete slab on the underside of the bridge,” said Mr Lister.
The job is being carried out by PBS Construction on behalf of East Riding of Yorkshire Council, who are using the former Springfield Garage as an operating base.
