A DENTAL nurse is flying the flag for Bridlington at this year’s Miss Scarborough and District competition.
Christine Bowtell, 23, of Great Barn Street, has entered the annual beauty contest in the hope that she can make it all the way to the glittering Miss England final this summer.
It is the first time the former Headlands student has taken part in a beauty pageant and her mind was made up after realising that she would soon be too old to enter the competition.
She said: “I read about it in the Free Press and when I saw that the age limit was 24, I thought, I’m going to be 24 in three weeks time, so if I don’t do this now then I never will.
“I was nervous at first, but I’m looking forward to it now.
“I’m quite confident that I will at least get through the first round and then we’ll have to see how it goes, but to get all the way through to the Miss England finals would be very exciting,” added Christine, who works at VI Dental on Quay Road and will be taking her final nursing exams in May.
Tiaras and ballgowns are a world away from the dental surgery and from Christine’s initial ambition of being in the armed forces – a dream she was forced to abandon after a medical condition meant she couldn’t sign up – but Christine is focused on the competition and hopes to go all the way for Bridlington.
“I’ve seen the competition and it’s not like I’m expecting to win – but I’m going to do my best,” she said.
Christine will take part in heats in Scarborough at the end of this month and if successful, will compete in the Miss Scarborough and District final at Scarborough Spa on May 14.
Victory in the Scarborough final will lead to a place in the ultimate Miss England final this summer and could pave the way for a future career in modelling.
l The closing date for Miss Scarborough and District entries is April 15 and the competition is open to residents in Bridlington and the surrounding area with a YO postcode.
