A WOMAN who suffers from a rare strain of multiple sclerosis has ticked off an item from her wish list after being treated to a makeover in time for her 21st birthday celebrations.
Pictured is Charlotte Black, also known as Charl, who was left looking and feeling incredibly glamorous after her makeover at Cloud 9 on Quay Road.
Knowing that a makeover was on Charl’s list of things to do before she reached 21 the Free Press organised the treat in conjunction with Cloud 9 as a Christmas gift.
Her mum Caroline Rose said it made for an unforgettable experience which has really perked up Charl who at the end of last year had taken the difficult decision to end her treatment because some of the side effects were making her feel worse.
“She absolutely loved it, she said it was one of the best days she has ever had,” said Caroline who started fund-raising last summer to help Charl realise some of her long-held ambitions.
“They told me if she made it to the age of 21 we would be lucky so now every day and anything we do with her is an added bonus,” Caroline added.
Former Headlands School pupil Charl, of Meadow Road was first diagnosed with MS at the age of 17 and now needs 24-hour care and rarely leaves the house.
After stopping her medication Charl has been undergoing a course of steroid treatment, administered over three days at a time, every six months at Bridlington Hospital which Caroline said seems to be helping.
“Her treatment didn’t work and the only thing we rely on now is the steroids twice a year. We hope that will pull her back round again. She’s responding to them.
“It seems to have given us a bit of hope because last year we were being told there was nothing more she could have done and to get her last wishes and all of a sudden she’s on the steroids and things are looking up,” Caroline said.
Charl had been too unwell to celebrate her 21st birthday on January 4, but just over a week ago she was joined by friends and family at the Hilderthorpe Pub for a party to mark the special milestone.
At Cloud 9, April Gunning cut and coloured Charl’s hair, while international nail art champion J Coates, who is also an international judge and educator, did her nails, eyebrows and make-up.
April and Jo said: “We thoroughly enjoyed having Charlotte in here and enjoyed the day with her. She thoroughly had a good time.”
Next on Charl’s wish list is a skydive, while Caroline would like to arrange for her to meet some of her music idols including Professor Green, JLS and Dappy.
