THE advent calendar with a difference will be opening its doors for the third year on Bridlington beach throughout December.

The Rev Ben Norton, curate at Emmanuel Church, in Cardigan Road, will take over a beach hut on the south beach and use it to tell the story of the birth of Jesus – with the help of the gifts and talents of the local community.

The Rev Norton said: “Each night of Advent, between 6pm and 7pm, a different local group or artist will take a fresh look at the famous story in the lead up to Christmas day.

“We started the calendar because we wanted to retell the amazing story of the birth of Jesus in a new and fresh way.

“The story gets told in school plays, but the profound and challenging themes often get overlooked: issues such as homelessness and poverty, oppression, uncertainty and fear, as well as joy and light.”

The grand opening evening is tonight – Thursday, December 1 – starting at 6pm.

The event will feature local rapper Sky Blue while a host of other entertainment is planned for the forthcoming evenings.

“The people who will appear in the beach huts are all from our local community”, said the Rev Norton.

“This year we’ve got people cooking food the wise men would have eaten, a full sized knitted donkey and crib scene, and we’ll be once again creating the digital Christmas card we put up on YouTube and send to Afghanistan for our armed forces away this Christmas.”

It may be the last time that a Bridlington beach hut plays host to the special calendar as the Rev Norton looks set to move on from the town next year, but he said that this year is going to be as good as ever.

“All sorts of people have come along to the beach huts. Some people dip in and out throughout the month, whereas others will come down every night,” he said.

“There is a real and tangible sense of community that builds up during the month. It’s amazing to see people gathering together in the darkest, coldest time of the year sharing in a story that at times goes beyond our imaginations.”

People will be able to visit the Beach Hut Advent Calendar from 6pm to 7pm every night from December 1 to 24, at the south shore promenade, next to the tourist information office.
