MERCURY music prize winners The xx have spoken of their “excitement” at their Bridlington show, which takes place next week.
The band have been commissioned to write an original work for the show, which takes place at Bridlington Spa on Wednesday as part of the BBC Philharmonic Presents Festival.
The concert, which will be presented by DJ Zane Lowe and broadcast live on BBC Radio 1 from 7pm, will feature brand new material for the band and orchestra created with composer Alex Baranowski.
The xx said in a BBC interview that they were “looking forward to adding 70 people to the band” and were “so excited” for the Bridlington show.
Singer and guitarist Romy Madley-Croft said: “We want to use this opportunity to use the orchestra in an interesting way.
“There’s a lot of space in our music and we don’t want to fill it. We’re going to be quite restrained with how we use them. I suppose to just accentuate and bring different levels to each song.
“It would be so much fun to get out the timpani drums and go a bit nuts but we’re hoping to use them sparsely.”
Composer Baranowski, who has previously worked on the National Theatre’s productions of Hamlet and Frankenstein, said the new work would be “a mixture of arrangements of songs” from The xx’s first two albums, “along with some new orchestral material”.
Tickets for the show are awarded in a ballot, for which people had until Monday to register.
Those who were unsuccessful in their application can listen to the concert on Radio 1, or watch via the website bbc.co.uk/radio1. It will also be broadcast on the BBC Red Button service.
The xx’s performance will be the first of a series of big shows at the Spa.
