BRIDLINGTON'S newest park is in full swing but already there are fears it could slide into a state of disrepair very quickly.
After a £100,000 revamp, the new-look park in Queensgate opened at the weekend and is already proving popular with families.

But immediately talk has turned to how long the equipment will stay in one piece, with concerns that groups of teenagers could cause damage in the evenings.

Paul Wilson wrote to the Free Press to say the park was a perfect place to take children – except for "foul-mouthed, idiotic teenagers" spoiling it.

"They took to the swings, tried to get as many of them on them as they could and swung them as hard, high and fast as they could.

"Speaking to another parent, he agreed there should be a couple of wardens patrolling the park until about 8.30pm.

"During this time our younger children would be able to get on the swings – they never got the chance when we went.

"As parents, we know full well what we would get if we approached the teenagers.

"It's time the council or the police made provisions that these parks are for a certain age and should be patrolled during the summer months.

"Eventually this playground will get vandalised and all the younger children will suffer, once again," Mr Wilson said.

Coun Ray Allerston, whose ward covers the area, said he thought a CCTV camera could help to keep the park looking good in the long run.

He said: "They have done a great job to get the park looking so good.

"What we don't want is for it to be smashed up by the older children who go drinking at night.

"We had a similar problem with a play area in Little Beck Road several years ago and a CCTV camera helped.

"All it would take at Queensgate is one camera to make it better and keep an eye on things."

l AMONG the first to test out the new park was Benjamin Edwards, who is two years old.

This is what he thought (with a little help from his dad, Free Press reporter John Edwards).

"This is my favourite park in Bridlington. There is so much to do and lots of bright colours.

"And there is plenty of room for me to run around and the grass is very bouncy.

"There are two slides, a funny see-saw, swings and lots of things that spin round and round but I'm a bit little for some of them at the minute.

"I hope the bigger boys and girls don't spoil it, like they have with some of the other parks.

"I can't wait to go again."
