CANCER is the cause of heartache for millions – and more than 2,300 people ran Bridlington's Race For Life to help battle the disease.
Sewerby Hall was the starting point for Cancer Research UK's third fund-raising race in the town on Sunday.
Many were running the 5km trek in memory of a friend or a family member who lost their lives to cancer.
Boots employees Alma Goodlad and Joan Boland completed the run and Boots has generously matched the amount they raised – bringing their total up to £2,000.
"We really enjoyed it," said Alma, "It was the first time we'd done it and it was a very emotional day, but it also fantastic.
"We are absolutely over the moon with the amount we raised, we just can't believe it!" added Alma, who also thanked friends, family and Boots customers for donating.
Trish Robinson, assistant manager of the Stirling Castle, in Queen Street, prepared for the race by selling chocolate crispies in the pub and donating the proceeds. She completed the run in a medieval fancy dress costume alongside her daughter Janine and her four-year-old granddaughter Holly.
"It was absolutely fantastic," said Trish, "It was really nice to have three generations of girls in the the family doing it together.
"Once it's all collected the amount raised should be about £400 and I'd like to thank all the customers who bought the crispies and everyone who helped with the cooking. I couldn't have raised so much without them.
Joanne Cowan ran the course along with five of her Job Centre colleagues. Together they hope to have raised up to £300.
"It was a great day," said Joanne, "It's the third time we've done it and there's always a great atmosphere.
"All of us have people close to us that have experienced cancer and it's great to raise money for charity in a fun, positive way.
"We are all feeling stiff now though!" added Joanne, who admitted to running down the hills but not up them.
Nic Clarke, an organiser of the Race For Life events, said: "It was a brilliant day, and we are really thankful to everybody who took part on Sunday."
Last year the Bridlington Race for Life raised £127,000.
