COUNCILLORS want to take a look at a filling station site in Bridlington before making up their minds over an application to enlarge it and turn it into a Tesco Express.
Traders in nearby Old Town fear having a Tesco on their doorstep will kill their business.

At Monday's meeting of East Riding of Yorkshire Council's eastern area planning committee, Coun Ray Allerston presented a petition of 1,172 names objecting
to the plan for the Esso station near Scarborough Road roundabout.

"If this goes through I think at least half of High Street's shops will shut. I don't understand Tesco wanting to do this, they are already making a good living out of the town yet they want more. It is just greedy," said Coun Allerston.

Hayley Baker, manager of Old Town Stores in High Street, who started the petition, was also at the meeting.

"I was just fuming, they did seem to take any notice of the petition and how strongly we felt.

"They were more interested in a tree which would obstruct one of the entrances and not the fact the supermarket would kill Old Town.

"If Tesco go ahead they will be selling newspapers, magazines, groceries, bread and meat, all of which will affect Old Town's traders.

"We want people to come to Old Town but all they will see is boarded up shops," she said.

Councillors will have a site meeting and report back to the next council meeting in June.
