SUPERMARKET shoppers have been urged to support a new scheme providing food and toiletries for Bridlington's homeless
A donations box will be placed by the entrance of the town's Tesco store so customers can buy an extra item as they shop, and leave it to be distributed by the Kingfisher Trust.

The organisation co-ordinates a soup run three days a week for the town's homeless population and its volunteers will make sure the goods go to those who need them most.

Tesco workers Linda Spalding and Sandra Burns help co-ordinate fund-raising for the trust and came up with the idea after seeing how successful similar schemes have proved for animal charities.

Linda said: "The idea is to give food, not money.

"Anything that can be eaten out of a tin really, like soups and beans, and things like tea bags and face wash can also be donated."

Kingfisher Trust chairman Deirdre McGarry said: " There is a list on the box saying what we need. We are constantly in need of items and will be very grateful for donations.

"We are delighted that Tesco has recognised the need and we encourage customers to drop something in the box, not necessarily every week but as and when they can."

The recently revived Kingfisher Trust is still working on the idea of a homeless shelter in Bridlington and is seeking premises.

It is planning an awareness day on June 14 to recruit more volunteers.
