CRITICS of the cost of redeveloping Bridlington Spa have been told it could have cost far more.
There were originally two choices when it came to bringing the Spa into the 21st century – knocking it down and building a new complex, or refurbishing the existing building.
Taking the first option could have seen the bill rise to £60m, according to regeneration bosses who are convinced the £20m project is 'worth every penny'.
Martyn Coltman, chairman of Bridlington Regeneration Partnership, had a sneak preview of the complex last week.
He said: "For those concerned at the price tag it may be worth reminding them that as part of the major public consultation on the new Regeneration Strategy in 2004, we asked the public whether they would like to see a new Spa altogether or refurbish and enhance the present building.
"The overwhelming response was to preserve this much-loved building, which is of course exactly what has happened.
"Having just seen it, I can say it's absolutely beautiful. It's a credit to all concerned and I hope will be a beacon of pride for positive change.
"The quality in every detail is truly superb and encompasses every concept that the Renaissance process has set out to achieve for Bridlington.
"It has enhanced style, quality, elegance and shouts out to all ages to use it and be proud of it. I also believe the superb programme that the Spa team have come up with is absolutely second to none.
"Of course had the public chosen in 2004 to knock down and rebuild a 'new' Spa we would I'm sure not have recaptured the unique elegance of the art deco ballroom and Edwardian theatre, nor would it have come with a £20m price tag but something in the region of two-to-three times this figure.
"I would appeal to everyone to go and see what has been created and above all please use it, be proud of it and spread the word about it."
