After the completion of civil engineering works, which were undertaken to remove the B&Q roundabout in Hilderthorpe Road, and replace it with a traffic signal controlled junction, work has been underway this week on ensuring the signals work properly.

John Lister, Head of Bridlington Renaissance, explained that the final stage in the process was programming the new traffic lights to ensure the system works.

Speaking earlier this week Mr Lister said: "If it works perfectly you might see the signals working tomorrow, but they have until Thursday (today) to get them going.

"As with anything like this it takes time to do all the programming."

Once finished, engineers may have to come back to alter timings on the signals, but it is hoped the four new sets of traffic lights will help reduce congestion and improve traffic flow into the town.

As well as installing the traffic lights, Bessingby Road was widened to create two lanes of traffic in each direction and St James Road, which used to be one way from the roundabout, has been closed at the Bessingby Road end and made two way.

The works were carried out under the Integrated Transport Action Plan, part of Bridlington's Area Action Plan to shape regeneration and the town's future.
