A LONG-RUNNING pensioners' Monday club has been saved after New Pasture Lane Primary School stepped in to provide a new venue for meetings.
The Monday Day Care Group had been meeting at the New Pasture Lane Community Centre for over 20 years, but the two main organisers told the centre they were stepping down in early January.

The remaining club members were determined to continue their weekly Monday meetings and re-secured funding and transport, but were then told that their slot at the centre had already been given to the New Pasture Lane Pre-school.

Following last month's Free Press report, Monday Day Care Group secretary Mavis Akrill said she received several offers from other venues in the town – and Sue Tompkin, headteacher of New Pasture Lane School was keen for the club to meet at the school.

Mrs Tompkin checked with social services that the venue met requirements for funding and the club enjoyed its first meeting at its new home on Monday.

Mavis said: "We are all delighted and everybody has been giving a big sigh of relief that we managed it.

"I think it is going to work out really well for us at the school.

"Everybody has been very helpful and made us feel most welcome.

"The room is one which they use for staff meetings and it is very nice.

"It has a little area where we can make drinks and there are disabled toilets nearby which is fantastic.

"This week is just about settling in and then we are going to get down to the business of getting more members."

Mrs Tompkin said she was happy she was able to help the group continue its Monday meetings.

The Day Care Group will now meet at New Pasture Lane School on Mondays from around 10am to 2.30pm.
