Parking signs are 'confusing'

HIGHER parking charges are already making motorists mad but misleading signs are making matters worse.
Notices explaining the new fees at some town centre car parks have been described as "confusing" and could even be ripping drivers off.

Motorists could have found themselves forking out up to £13 when the charge they should have been paying was a third of that price.

Coun Richard Burton said: "Local councillors were concerned at what effect even the moderate increase in parking charges will have but when the new rates were shown on the ticket machines something was clearly wrong.

"The prices were nothing like those as shown in the budget. The signs are confusing and make it impossible to work out how much to pay.

"The £3.50 day charge isn't mentioned so people were asked to pay up to £13. This is not acceptable."

Local Conservative councillors have informed council officers of the errors and told them to get the machines recalibrated immediately.

Coun Chad Chadwick said: "After speaking to officers, I can confirm the two car parks at North Street and Leisure World will be a maximum of £3.50 a day.

"It will be proposed that the overnight parking rate of £3.50, up from 70p, will be amended to £1.30 once the necessary legal notices come into force."

The councillors have also ensured a full review of parking charges in Bridlington will be carried out.

The package of new charges, which was announced a couple of months ago and includes prices almost doubling in some cases, has been criticised by local businesses, residents and visitors.

In his blog on the Bridlington Free Press website, Coun Geoff Pickering said: "We are all pressing for a better deal for Bridlington residents and feel it is unfair that they have to pay the same rate and have the same restrictions on parking as visitors to the town, especially when there are a number of other towns in the East Riding which still have free parking.

"We will be asking if this is fair on our residents and businesses.

"Most places have resident discount and resident-only parking schemes and this may be a solution for Bridlington.

"It is not just a matter of reducing charges. Any savings for residents would have to be balanced elsewhere, so the review will have to look at the effect of parking charges on tourism and the economy."
