A DIVIDED town council has elected former deputy mayor Coun Tony Padwick to take the chain of office from Coun Ray Allerston and Coun Liam Dealtry is the new deputy mayor.
Coun Cyril Marsburg ran for mayor and deputy but, although votes were split down the middle for deputy, Coun Padwick had the casting vote which saw Coun Dealtry elected.
The process was not altogether smooth and half the councillors were clearly unhappy about the appointment of the new deputy.
Coun Bob Owen suggested Coun Dealtry did not attend as many meetings as he should.
Coun Dealtry replied: "I will carry out my duties to the very best of my abilities and will attend all the meetings I am asked to attend. That is all I can promise."
Coun Shelagh Finlay backed Coun Dealtry, suggesting that due to his other work commitments he was not always able to attend, but that it was wrong to suggest he lacked commitment.
Handing over the chain of office to Coun Padwick, former mayor Coun Allerston said: "It has been a very good year, I have enjoyed meeting a lot of people.
"I am not sorry to give it up though. At the end it gets very tiring and I think you will find that out."
