A DISTINCTLY unpleasant aroma is hanging around the Flashdales treatment works – as Bridlington has been receiving extra waste from Hull.
Maintenance work is ongoing at a sludge treatment facility in Hull, meaning lorry loads of waste is being transported by road to the Yorkshire Water facility at Flashdales, near Carnaby.
Local resident John Swift claimed the smell around the plant
had been awful over the last couple of weeks.
Mr Swift said: "Hull doesn't live by its fresh air, but we do. We won't be attracting anybody with a smell like this.
"I can't understand why anything would be brought to Bridlington if it is going to cause problems. We have enough already."
A spokesman from Yorkshire Water confirmed waste usually processed in Hull is being treated in Bridlington, but it was a temporary arrangement and normal procedure.
The spokesman said: "We have to carry out routine maintenance of our plants and the waste has to be treated elsewhere.
"In this case it is Bridlington. The sludge being moved to Bridlington has already begun being processed so it is dry, flaky and just in need of final treatment at Bridlington.
"People may have noticed a few more lorries but it is nothing that hasn't happened at the plant before."
He added the maintenance work at the Hull facility was due to be finished by the end of the week, so Flashdales would soon return to normal capacity and the smell should disappear.
