Huge rise in parking fees

CAR parking charges in Bridlington are set to rocket – with some fees almost doubling.
The increases – which will see motorists having to pay £5 a day to park in Moorfield Car Park instead of the current £2.80 – have been described as "not helpful" for tourism.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council is bringing in new rates across its region from Friday, March 28.

It will cost £1.30 an hour to park in the town – up from 90p – and coaches will now pay up to £9 a day to park.

Similar increases will come in in Flamborough and Sewerby and annual parking passes also go up £19 to £350.

Glenn Holmes, the newly-elected president of Bridlington's Hotel and Guest House Association, said: "This is not helpful for tourism.

"Any increase always has an effect on tourism and in some instances the increases are quite big. However, I appreciate the council has to make increases and it does bring us more in line with other areas, like Scarborough.

"Perhaps when the park and ride is running the council will make those charges less to encourage people to use it."

Coun Symon Fraser, portfolio holder for environment, streetscene and development control, said: "The increases will not be very popular with motorists but sadly they are a necessary evil.

"The all-day charges remain significantly lower than those in Hull and York."

The increases were agreed as part of the council's budget for the coming year.

The council claims feedback to the proposals showed people would rather have higher charges than cuts in services or higher council taxes.

The increases include:

* Off street parking in Beck Hill, Leisure World, the Spa slipway, Beaconsfield, Nelson Street and North Street in summer will be £1.30p (currently 90p): winter rates will be £1 an hour (now 70p).

* Charges for off-street parking places in Flamborough Road and Hilderthorpe Road increase to £1.30 an hour or £5 a day for summer and to £1 an hour or £5 a day in winter.

* Langdales Wharf near the harbour and Palace Car Park £1.30p an hour (now 90p). Overnight charges go up to £5 (now just 70p).

* On-street parking in North and South Marine Drive rises to £1.30 an hour in summer and £1 in winter.

* Moorfield Car Park rises to £1 an hour and £5 for all day, winter and summer (currently 70p an hour and £2.80 all day).

* Out of the town centre, summer parking goes from 70p to £1 an hour, and from 45p to 50p in winter on Belvedere (South Cliff), Limekiln Lane, Sewerby picnic area, South Landing, Flamborough Head and Danes Dyke.
