A BRIDLINGTON trio narrowly missed out on achieving national success in their first major televised computer game competition – after losing out to some of Europe's top gamers.
The team of Squadra Recon, featuring brothers Luke and Ashley Sowersby and Peter Attack, all from Bridlington, and team-mates Simon Dunn from Blackpool and Sam Reeve from London, pushed the cream of online gaming all the way in a fierce battle on the action game Call Of Duty 4.
The contest was filmed at studios in London last month and shown on the XLeague.TV satellite channel on Sky.
In an intense semi-final, the team, which plays on the Xbox 360 console, saw off competition from the team Natural Definition, to set up a final place with the current champions Team iDentity, who compete regularly with the best players from the continent.
With the final based on an aggregate points system based on the team's semi-final performances, Squadra Recon found themselves 3-1 in the best of 11 contest before the final began.
And despite establishing an early stronghold on one of the games, Squadra Recon could not hold on to their advantage and eventually went down 6-1.
Although defeated, the team were pleased with their achievement and said it was only the superior experience of their opposition which stopped them taking the glory.
Luke, Squadra Recon's manager, said: "The team set out in the beginning of the ladder aiming to take second position, and in doing so, we are very pleased with our achievement.
"Although we would have liked to have pushed iD to a few more rounds, their experience proved too much.
"It was a really enjoyable match, which mattered most for the team, and the experience will allow us to be prepared for upcoming tournaments."
Headlands School sixth form students Luke, 18, and Ashley, 17, live in Darwin Road, while Peter, 17, is from St Columba Road.
The team has its own website, www.sqrecon.co.uk.
