AMID all the fears of services being stripped from Bridlington Hospital, there is finally some good news for the site.
It has been earmarked as the preferred site for the East Riding's new GP-led health centre, which is due to be open in a year, and would offer evening and weekend appointments.
The extra surgeries would be open 8am-8pm, 365 days a year, and would allow patients to walk in and see a doctor without an appointment.
Health bosses believe Bridlington is a better location than the two other options, Goole and Beverley, and a month-long public consultation exercise is now underway.
East Riding of Yorkshire Primary Care Trust's director of planning and procurement, Dr Duncan Ross, said: "This is a major opportunity for
people to get involved in the location of new, enhanced GP services for the East Riding.
"We would welcome comments from all interested parties to help us develop services for local people where they are needed, when they are needed most."
Bridlington is being supported as the first choice location because of its high number of visitors in the summer and its high proportion of elderly residents.
Another key factor is the fact existing GP surgeries in the town are struggling to cope with the demand from patients looking to register.
In the last two years, patient watchdogs have received complaints from more than 160 people in Bridlington who have not been able to sign up with a GP.
The town's hospital is said to have 'significant potential' in terms of accommodation which could be transformed into the new health centre.
The final decision on its location will be made in August and the new centre should open next April.
