A CAR with five people on board struck two others and demolished two garden walls and railings before catching fire.
Fire, ambulance and police were called to the scene on North Marine Road, Flamborough, at 11.15pm on Monday.

The driver, and three of the four passengers in the white Subaru Impreza, were taken to hospital in Scarborough.

But only one, a 16-year-old girl who was in the front passenger seat, was detained, with serious but not life-threatening back injuries.

The crash has prompted new calls for action over speeding on North Marine Road..

Members of Flamborough Parish Council, had been discussing the problem at their meeting only hours before the crash..

Coun Ian Woodhouse, chairman, said: "It is just like a race track. We have been wanting some action from the police for some time.

"Signs don't do any good, we need are some police out there with speed cameras and people taken to court, as much for their own safety as anyone else.

"This kind of accident has been waiting to happen."

The Impreza was heading towards the village when it approached a taxi which was turning in the road.

Police said the driver lost control of the vehicle, collided with the kerb, struck the front of the taxi, and struck the kerb again before hitting a parked Rover 214 pushing it two house lengths down the road and demolishing front garden walls and railings to terrace houses, before catching fire.

It was put out with an extinguisher before firefighters arrived.

Scott Suggitt, whose mother Irene had just gone to bed, said her badly damaged Rover had to be taken to a recovery yard.

"If anyone had been in it they would have been killed or very seriously injured," he said.

The taxi driver suffered whiplash. Police investigating the incident want anyone who saw the Impreza erarlier that evening to contact them on 0845 6060222
