TURKEYS are generally the birds of the festive season, but Bridlington Scouts are putting their faith in a chicken to bring some Christmas cheer.
The 1st Bridlington Scout Group are selling T-shirts featuring their mascot, Doris the chicken, in the hope of raising money to buy camping equipment and fund future expeditions.

Doris was one of seven chickens hatched by the Scouts at Easter last year after the group were given a box of eggs as thanks for helping to clear an allotment of rubbish.

She actually started out in life as Boris, but her name was soon changed by the scouts after she laid an egg.

David Butland, of the Scout Group, said that the original idea was to print a limited number of T-shirts to give as Christmas
presents to the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts.

"When we looked into it, we realised it would actually work out cheaper if we ordered more T-shirts," said David.

"So we thought we'd get 100 printed and sell them, firstly to cover the costs of giving the T-shirts to the youngsters as Christmas presents and then to raise money for camping."

David explained that the Scouts generally go on a camping expedition at least once a month throughout the year.

"It is expensive and we don't want to have to keep expecting parents to have to pay. Some of our parents have a lot of kids and not a lot of money so we hope that the T-shirts will be popular and can really help our group," added David.

The T-shirts, costing £6.99, are expected to be available from tomorrow.

They can be ordered in children's sizes from Peter Arthur's menswear shop on Bridge Street or from the Scouts website at www.1stbridlingtonscouts. co.uk.

If the scheme proves a success, more T-shirts may be made available in colours other than standard white and a range of adult clothes, including sweatshirts, may also be produced.
