Bus axed from 'danger' road

PEOPLE in a Bridlington street have lost their bus service because the council has not repaired the road.
The hourly 510 East Yorkshire Motor Services (EYMS) bus linking the town centre with Flamborough will make its last trip along St Aidan Road this weekend after the company said the rollercoaster ride was a danger to passengers and its vehicles.

The mainly elderly residents say it will mean they are trapped in their homes as many are unable to walk to the next nearest bus stops in Queensgate and Fortyfoot.

A local councillor has described the situation as a disgrace.

Bob Rackley, EYMS commercial manager, said: "We do not want to alter the service, which is well used, but we are concerned the state of St Aidan Road could cause serious damage to our buses or lead to passengers falling on the bus and being injured.

"We have had discussions with the council over a long period of time about this but nothing has happened."

The 510 bus will now bypass the road by using Fortyfoot and Queensgate on its way from Flamborough and Sewerby to the town centre.

Resident Keith Williams, 68, a former ambulance driver and station officer, said the road had never been re-surfaced in the 40 years he had lived in the area.

Its uneven, patched-up surface even means some taxi drivers will not use it from the Queensgate end, which is the worst part.

Mr Williams said: "We are being penalised for the lack of road repairs by the council.

"They give you a bus pass then the buses are taken away.

"It is too far to walk to Queensgate or Fortyfoot for many of the elderly people who live here and rely on the bus. I know one lady who is 92 who uses it regularly."

Their local councillor Ray Allerston said the road had never had proper foundations and had been sinking and been patched up for years.

"I was told about three years ago that what it needed was completely bottoming, digging up and re-laying but at that time it would have cost around £700,000.

"I can't imagine what it would cost now.

"I think it is a disgrace that this council is charging residents the highest possible rates it is allowed and we also pay the highest car parking charges in the East Riding yet can't get anything done about this road," said Coun Allerston.

A spokesman for East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: "St Aidan Road suffers from a problem common in old concrete roads, some of which were not designed to cope with the current traffic volumes and have sub-standard foundations. This may be the case in this instance. Slabs appear to have started 'rocking' and settling. leaving an irregular surface.

"Remedial repairs are undertaken on the road to prevent it from becoming unsafe but at some point in the future it is likely to need major structural repairs.

"The condition of this and other roads in the Bridlington area will again be assessed later this year to see what can be achieved with the limited maintenance funding available."
