THE village was gridlocked as visitors turned out in their hundreds to make this year's Bempton Victorian Christmas market one of the best yet.
After being blighted by bad weather which in recent years caused one total cancellation, organisers were delighted with Sunday's clear blue skies and winter sun.

Richard Burton, chairman of the market committee, said: "It was absolutely fantastic – at times it was standing room only. It has been one of our best ever, thanks to the weather."

Visitors enjoyed more than 40 stalls, most manned by people in Victorian
costume, Santa, who arrived with gifts for the children, carols by 41 singers from Bempton Primary School and a march to the market centre by the Children of the Mist Pipe Band.

The event was officially opened by Coun Chris Matthews, chairman of East Riding of Yorkshire Council, and ran from 11am to around 4pm.
Mr Burton added: "The village was locked by traffic, but I suppose that is a consequence of having a success. In fact the only attraction which didn't make it was the fairground organ. I understand the man couldn't get through the cars and eventually gave up and went home."

The fair helps local groups raise funds for village causes and most said they had done well.
