MORE than 20 animals could have new homes after an RSPCA appeal on the front page of last week's Free Press.
The local branch, which is over-run with more than 100 unwanted pets, said it had a good response to the story.
Treasurer Kay Harrison said: "We are all really pleased. Even if we had been able to rehome just one pet it would have been worthwhile.
"The situation is in people's minds now so when they are looking for a pet, maybe after they come back off holiday, they will remember the article and come to us."
Volunteers are due to make nine home visits for people who phoned and wanted dogs, and already a rabbit, three guinea pigs and several birds have been given to new owners.
There were six calls about cats and kittens.
One caller, a woman who had two cats but wanted two more, is asked to call again because she left an incorrect telephone number on the answering machine.
To adopt a dog, call 01377 240325. To adopt a cat or rabbit, leave your details on 409080.
