A MAN who assaulted his elderly father because he would not give him money for drink and cigarettes has been given six months to continue to resolve a drugs and alcohol problem.
Andrew John Dyson, 34, who was said to have been living in Station Road, Bridlington, but was now receiving help with an alcohol problem elsewhere, appeared at Bridlington Magistrates' Court last Friday having admitted a charge of common assault.

Andrew Sterling told magistrates that Dyson's father, who was in his 60s, was at home in the Burstall Hill area of Bridlington at 6pm on April 25 when Dyson came round, either under the influence of drink, drugs or both.

He wanted money to buy vodka and became aggressive towards his father, taking hold of him by his clothing and saying: "I will smash you up."

His father eventually agreed to go out and buy vodka and cigarettes with Dyson.

"Shaken up by the incident, Mr Dyson senior reported him to the police.

"He was frightened he would come back and there could be other incidents," said Mr Sterling.

When interviewed by police, Dyson had said he could not remember the incident but it was possible it had happened.

He also said his father had a heart problem.

For Dyson, Ed Cunnah said he had been co-operating with social services in attempts to keep him off drugs and alcohol.

Martin Dodgson, presiding magistrate, told him: "It is very unfortunate that you attacked your own father but we want to give you a chance to remove the problem of alcohol and drugs."

He asked that Dyson be the subject of a further report to the bench in six months which would be in December. "If you get a good report, you will get a good Christmas present of an absolute discharge," said Mr Dodgson.
