FROM cakes to cabins – business is back at the former Sara Lee premises near Bridlington.
Elliott Modular has spent £3million on the Carnaby Industrial Estate site and created 90 jobs for local workers, with the prospect of more vacancies in the future.
The building has been transformed into an assembly plant and refurbishment centre for portable buildings.
Managing director Paul O'Kelly said: "The opening of the new assembly plant in Carnaby is the culmination of a two-and-a-half year development plan to provide Elliott Modular with a world class assembly and refurbishment facility with the flexibility to service our customers for the next 10 to 20 years."
It hires out portable cabins, secure storage, portable toilets, temporary kitchens, fencing and fast-track buildings throughout the UK.
These are rented or sold in the public and private sectors and commonly used as school classrooms, temporary offices or health centres.
The 13-acre site is the company's biggest in Europe. It had been operating from a number of smaller sites across the country but had outgrown them and were looking for a much larger site with growth potential.
The company said it had chosen Carnaby because of 'its position in the heart of a region closely associated with the modular buildings industry, thereby providing access to an experienced local supplier base and workforce'.
Operations director Doug Robertshaw said: "Elliott Modular's relocation to Carnaby has been highly successful and we now have a site that will help us operate more efficiently while also offering growth potential into the future."
An official opening ceremony was held last week when 150 guests saw Coun Chris Matthews, chairman of East Riding of Yorkshire Council, cut the ribbon.
The site was previously the Frigoscandia cold store which was opened in association with Sara Lee in 1993.
At that time it was Europe's largest cold store and cost £5.5m. It was used as a storage and distribution centre for frozen desserts for Sara Lee and later Hibernia.
Frigoscandia later became Celsius First, and the building was later taken on by Alpine Foods, but closed in 2006.
East Riding council's investment team provided assistance throughout to help bring the project to fruition and the company started to move in last Christmas.
Council leader Coun Stephen Parnaby OBE said: "Elliott Modular's investment at Carnaby will create good quality skilled sustainable jobs which is great news for the area in these challenging economic times."
