'We know it will be hard work'

DAVE and Gina Renaut-Evans do like to be beside the seaside.
So, when the chance arose to run their own B&B, a stone’s throw from the new £20m Spa, and with sea views from their living room, they took the plunge.
Joined by Gina’s dad George, they have left Barnsley taken on the Blantyre Hotel in Pembroke Terrace, and they didn’t have to wait long for their first test.
“I came round to pick up the keys on a Friday morning at 10.10am, and 10 minutes later the first guests arrived. But we must have done something right because they have been back again since.”
Before moving to the coast last month, Dave worked in logistics and Gina in corporate hospitality at Sheffield Arena, but they had discussed the hotel idea for a while.
Gina said: “We had fancied doing it for ages and you get to a point where you think ‘if we don’t do it now, we’ll never get round to doing it’.
“We were originally going to do it as a form of retirement but then thought ‘why wait til then?’.
“Friends and family were a bit shocked but everybody has been behind us and it’s amazing how many poeple have said ‘we wanted to do that’.
Dave added: “One of the attractions is being your own boss, and neither of us have been frightened of hard work.
“We realise it is not idyllic and this is not a money-making thing. If it was purely financial, we would have stayed in our old jobs.
“But we have put everything into this, and you don’t get a guaranteed salary coming in at the end of the month.”
So, why Bridlington and not one of the other many seaside resorts?
Dave said: “Bridlington is a nice place, with nice beaches and you can see the council is spending money.
“There is an awful lot of entertainment and it is becoming renowned for events like the darts.
“And we can’t believe how many people there are here, even at this time of year.”
