BRIAN and Jean Watson, of Burstall Hill, went eight days without heating and, like many others, they have a long list of electrical appliances which need replacing.
Mrs Watson said: "We have lost our video, microwave, toaster and telephones but the worst thing of all is the heating.
"I am nearly 79 and we can't do with this cold. But I have to speak up for the electricity company because we had a gentleman in on Thursday and he was very considerate, polite and kind. I am just frightened it might happen again."
The couple's main priority is keeping warm so, as well as sitting by the gas fire, Mrs Watson was wearing five layers of clothing.
She said: "I have got a gas hob so that again is a blessing but go upstairs and go to the bathroom and it is like going into an ice box."
Their insurance company has said it will compensate them and they are waiting for some gift vouchers for Currys so they can buy some new electrical goods.
Mrs Watson said: "Lots of people are grumbling but they can only do so much.
"I think it should never have happened but it did.
"We have been through a lot but nothing has frightened me as much as this."
