Stygia
Stygia, Conan RPG, Mongoose Publishing, £20.
With great pyramids and lurking reptiles, lost tombs and endless deserts, the 160-page Stygia sourcebook provides an ominous setting for any Conan campaign.
Covering the culture, society, military and magic of Stygia, this book contains everything you need to open the doors to a land that is both wondrous and terrible.
Stygia, the serpent of the south, is one of the most forbidding and fascinating places in the Hyborian Age, a land dominated by the workship of Father Set and his many sub-cults.
The political situation in this Eqypt-like land is rife with intrigue, murder and horror and can be the setting for numerous campaigns, although foreign adventurers be warned - Stygia deserves its evil reputation.
The Life in Stygia section of what is another superb Vincent Darlage sourcebook details its mysterious culture with topics including clothing, occupations, the economy and the country's complex social hierarchy.
Other chapters look at Stygia's many cults; powerful sorcery; its military might, new armour and equipment and warfare tactics; festivals; and medicines and illnesses, including a spotlight on mummies and mummification.
As to be expected from this excellent Mongoose Publishing series, there is an extensive gazetteer, the usual detailing of Stygian-specific skills, feats and maneouvres, a bestiary of monsters and statistics for non-player characters.
The sourcebook also provides a list of Stygian names and a wide range of gaming hooks.
It is a veritable tome of Stygian knowledge and any adventurers brave - or foolhardy - enough to journey beyond the mighty Styx River will have the campaign of their lives on their hands in a country teeming with with sinister sorcerors, human sacrifice and forbidding locations.
Top marks again Mr Darlage and Mongoose, you are doing Robert E Howard proud.
