Recycle or bling up your wellies at Bempton

RSPB Bempton Cliffs has appealed for people to take their old wellies along to the nature reserve to give them a new lease of life and help the birds at the same time.
Staff and volunteers at the nature reserve are on the look out for old wellies to recycle as part of ‘Welly Season’.
With a little inventiveness, an old pair of rubber boots can easily be turned into a bird feeder, a miniature garden, or even a watering can.
Ian Kendall, reserve manager, said: “If you have an old pair of wellingtons kicking around in the garage or shed, bring them along to us and we’ll show you interesting ways to re-use them.
“Making bird feeders will come in especially handy at the moment. With sub-zero temperatures, birds are in need of a helping hand to find food.
“And if you make a bird feeder this week you could even use it to attract birds to your garden for Big Garden Birdwatch this weekend.”
From mid January through to the end of March there will be lots of other welly related events to brighten up winter.
Weekend Welly Walks are taking place at 2pm every Sunday. A gentle ramble around the reserve, in the company of a knowledgeable volunteer, is a great way to work off Sunday lunch and learn more about the local wildlife as well as the RSPB’s conservation work.
Younger visitors are sure to enjoy ‘Bling your Boots’ which involves adding a touch of glamour to boots, with the help of creatively-minded volunteers. The best creations will be showcased on the RSPB Bempton Cliffs Facebook page.
Scott Smith, visitor services manager, promises even more fun in the coming months: “We hope by celebrating the welly we’ll encourage people to engage with nature whatever the weather. So rain or shine, there’ll be something interesting to get stuck into on the reserve.”
While most activities are free, ‘Bling your Boots’ has a £2 charge. The reserve is open every day throughout winter and the visitor centre is open from 9.30am to 4pm. Parking is free to members and £5 for non-members.
RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch takes place on Saturday January 26 and 27, giving people across the UK the chance to be part of the world’s biggest wildlife survey.
