A NEW gallery has opened in Bridlington, showcasing some of the best local artistic talent.

Opened by award winning Bridlington photographer Jean Illingworth, the ‘Chasing the Light’ gallery has opened as part of a co-operative project with three other small businesses, ‘At No. 12’, on Wellington Road.

The official opening last weekend saw local singer / songwriter David Swann, cut the ribbon to celebrate its opening. David then performed in the Gallery during the afternoon, including playing the title track of his latest album, also called ‘Chasing the Light’ (recorded at South Beach Studios, Bridlington), which was written after he had seen an exhibition of Jean’s photographs last year.

Jean’s work is inspired by the Yorkshire Wolds, villages and coast, especially Bridlington South Beach, and after a number of successful solo exhibitions, Jean said she is “delighted” to now have her own gallery.

Jean said: “It’s been a dream of mine for many years to have my own Gallery, as I want others to enjoy and celebrate our beautiful area – to see what I see here.

The light here is amazing, and with David Hockney being here, and the lovely galleries in the Old Town and at the Spa, I’d like to think that this is part of a growing Art’s Renaissance in Bridlington.

“I will have themed exhibitions throughout the year, and look forward to making the best of other local artists and craftspeople accessible to the people of Bridlington.” Also at No 12, which opened on November 5, are the ‘Little Organic Bakery’, ‘Crema Espresso Bar’, and ‘Heart and Home’, bringing four specialist small businesses together in a co-operative project.

Prior to opening the Gallery, Jean has had six major exhibitions, three at Bridlington Spa, and organised the Coast Project earlier this year to celebrate the area’s stunning scenery.

Part of the Coast Project was a photography workshop with two photography competitions - one for children and one for adults.

The winning picture in the adult competition, by 16-year-old Lydia Meredith, ‘Spurn Point before the storm’, is currently on display in the new gallery.

‘At No 12’ is open Tuesday to Saturday, 10am-4pm, and for sale in the ‘Chasing the Light’ Gallery are framed original pictures, prints, greeting cards, postcards and local calendars.
