TV motormouth Jeremy Clarkson has ruffled a few feathers in Bridlington after a comment about the town on last Sunday’s Top Gear.

According to Mr Clarkson, “Nobody dreams about going to Filey or Bridlington, they dream about going to Tahiti.”

Mr Clarkson, originally from Doncaster, made the comment whilst comparing a number of supercars, though not everyone seems to agree.

There was outrage from some on Facebook, one woman telling Clarkson to “shut his trap” whilst expressing amazement at why the presenter, who last year found himself in hot water over comments made about public sector strikers, had not been sacked.

Without agreeing with Mr Clarkson’s opinions, some Bridlington residents were more balanced with their comments.

Sylvia Wright, from the Bridlington Tourism Association, said; “I was certainly not bothered by the comments, it’s just Jeremy Clarkson being Jeremy Clarkson, it’s just who he is and it was just a throwaway comment.

“If you took everything he said seriously you’d be a very unhappy person.”

Whilst many would agree Tahiti is a dream destination, Bridlington is not without its charm and this got us thinking, what has the Pacific paradise got that our peaceful seaside town hasn’t?

Tahiti, the most populated island of French Polynesia, boasts sandy beaches and average summer high temperatures of around 29 degrees, although not quite as hot with summer average highs of around 18.7 degrees, both Bridlington’s North and South beaches hold Quality Coast Awards recognising well managed clean beaches.

Interestingly if you are trying to avoid the wet weather you would be better staying in Bridlington with its 883mm average annual rainfall then venturing to Tahiti which sees around 1590mm of rain on average per year.

Also, according to the Hutchinson World Weather Guide, for a number of months each year heat and humidity can make life uncomfortable in Tahiti, a problem unlikely to occur on the east coast.

Whilst Tahiti is famous for its array of delicious fruits and seafoods, Bridlington is home to some of the nation’s best fish and chip shops including Fish and Chips at 149, winners of the 2011 Fish and Chip Shop of the Year award.

Bridlington is an attractive destination for day visitors, but tourists wishing to bask in the sun on Tahiti often face the prospect of a long haul flight with only a handful of airlines flying to the island.

On balance you can’t argue that Tahiti is a wonderful place to visit, but Mr Clarkson may be surprised to find another paradise a little closer to home.
