First panto at new Spa is a box office hit

AFTER three years without a panto at the Spa, Cinderella has set the standard for the rest to follow.

The show, featuring legendary magician Paul Daniels and his wife Debbie McGee, proved a roaring success during its three week run which ended on Sunday.

It received a glowing review on the Stage magazine website which commented that the real-life ponies and carriage ‘completed a quite outstanding Bridlington pantomime picture’ and referred to Paul Daniels as a ‘consummate professional’ who excelled in his role as Baron Hardup.

The celebrity couple told the Free Press that they had enjoyed their stay in Bridlington and made the most of the town’s festive events.

“We’ve had a lovely time and particularly enjoyed attending the Old Town Christmas Festival,” they said.

“The Spa is a wonderful venue and we’re pleased the show has been such a success. Everyone from staff at The Spa to members of the public have been very welcoming.”

Ruth Puckering, communications manager for the Spa, said that they could not have asked for a better panto season.

Overall box office figures for 2008 were some of the best ever and The Spa’s General Manager Jeremy Hartill hopes that the venue’s success since its mulit-million pound refurbishment will continue into 2009.

“We have had an excellent opening year,” he said.

“With both the summer show and pantomime breaking sales records, a series of sell-out rock concerts, high profile events such as Antiques Roadshow and the Winmau World Masters filling the Royal Hall and more.

“And that’s not to mention the opening launch week! “Hopefully we can continue to build on this success for 2009.”

Big names already confirmed to appear at the Spa this year include singer and television personality Jane McDonald in February and legendary musician Jools Holland in May..
