Emmie Beckitt with Ant and Dec
A YOUNG Bridlington singer enjoyed the “opportunity of a lifetime” after being scouted to appear on Britain’s Got Talent.
Emmie Beckitt, 12, went for her audition for the TV talent show in Birmingham on February 9, meeting her idols Ant and Dec and getting to sing in front of judges Simon Cowell, David Walliams, Amanda Holden and Alesha Dixon.
She was scouted from thousands of hopefuls by the show’s production team, after they saw clips of Emmie singing on YouTube.
Unfortunately, after being stopped by Simon while singing because he did not like her backing track, and starting again with different music, Emmie did not get through to the next round.
But Emmie was still described by David Walliams as “the next Katherine Jenkins” and told by Alesha that she “had a lovely quality” to her voice.
Her proud mum Marion explained that because of a running order mix-up, Emmie had to wait before she could perform and had to deal with a low volume microphone, before Simon stopped Emmie’s performance.
She said: “The audience were not happy but he explained he had stopped the performance because he didn’t like the backing track.
“He said that he wanted her back the next day and he would get her the right track, but then out of nowhere a sound enginer said we have a second song as a back up, and before Emmie knew it, she had to start and sing again.
“The crowd were so behind her and they were willing her on but after such a poor start with the delays, the microphone, and then Simon stopping the track, I just knew then that Emmie would not regain her confidence, the magic in Emmie’s voice just got lost, and unfortunatly it just was not meant to be.”
Emmie, who goes to St Augustine’s School in Scarborough, won the junior Yorkshire Coast’s Got Talent show at the Revelstoke Hotel in 2012 and is also a member of Bridlington Road Runners.
She found out she would be auditioning for the show the Wednesday before when Marion recieved a call from producers who explained she had been scouted from her YouTube clip – Emmie Beckitt Nessum Dorma.
The producers said that they loved Emmie’s classical singing voice, and when she got home from school Marion told a “rather shell shocked” Emmie that she had been one of a chosen few out of thousands that had been scouted.
At the audition, Emmie met her idols Ant and Dec who told her jokes about Simon Cowell to try and keep her calm before the performance.
And Emmie said that she wouldn’t think twice if she was invited back next year.
She said: “Sure I will. I wouldn’t have missed it for the world. I got to meet my idols Ant and Dec, sing in front of the judges, and it’s not every day you get told you could be the next Katherine Jenkins, plus I may get a bit more noticed next time.”
Emmie is currently studying for a Grade 6 qualification in singing, and she is training with a private coach in Scarborough with the help of the Bridlington Rotary Club. The Lords Feeffoes have also made a donation to help with a sound system, while the Bridlington Round Table are also big fans.
Emmie has sung at the Spa theatre and a host of local hotels and has been asked to sing at St Mary’s Cathedral in Middlesbrough in early March.
Marion continued: “She has fantastic support from her school music department, and she has lots of fans and loads of friends. Her biggest fan must be her older sister Alanis, 14, who is also a musician who likes to sing musical theatre. She gives Emmie a lot of encouragement and support.”
Alanis and Emmie will perform at the Spa Theatre for Leaps on Monday July 29.
