Diamond couple

A YOUTH club meeting led to a romance that has lasted over sixty years for Jack and Sheila Dalby-Glover.

The couple celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary last Thursday with friends and family at Burlington Court and the occasion brought back memories of their first meetings in Thurnscoe, near Rotherham.

“We used to go to scout meetings, youth clubs and church groups so we knew each other, then he asked me out to the cinema,” said Sheila.

“Some time later he proposed to me while we were watching a show in Leeds.

“It wasn’t particularly romantic or anything, it was just expected in those days that you got married.”

Jack and Shelia were married at Thurnscoe Central Hall Methodist Church in Rotherham on March 11, 1950.

Jack was a colliery worker and Sheila worked as a glass technician and the couple lived in several different areas of Yorkshire before retiring to Devon in 1987 where they qualified as dance teachers and led classes.

They returned to Yorkshire three-years-ago and said that they chose Bridlington because of its ‘good Yorkshire people’.

“There has always been a lot of love, not just for each other, but throughout the whole family,”

“And we have always managed to do things together. We haven’t gone off on our own tangents, we’ve always been together,” said Jack.

The couple, who live at Burlington Court, have a daughter and son and five grandchildren.
