Cracking panto for all the family

Anyone wanting to get into the festive spirit should make their way to The Spa in Scarborough over the next few weeks for this year’s cracking panto treat, Mother Goose.
This production is advertised with the slogan “A fabulous family panto”, so we tested this to the full with my wife and I taking our three youngest daughters, aged one, five and eight along to the Spa on a chilly Saturday afternoon.
Ian Moore dominates proceedings in the title role, especially when combining with her son Silly Billy, played with enthusiasm and boundless energy by Dale Ibbetson.
The story revolves around the school run by Mother Goose and the attempts of the evil Victoria Vanity (Katie Gregson) to prise away the dame’s goose Priscilla, who, just before the interval, is blessed with the power to lay golden eggs by the Good Fairy (Charlotte Buxton).
Gregson has great fun as the villainess of the piece, with her henchmen, The Squire (Phil Beck) and Evil Eric (Paul Ludlow) delivering a barrage of funny lines to keep the young audience laughing.
There is also a romantic sub-plot involving Billy and his friend Jill (Rebecca Christian), but the focus here is on laughs, although the underlying message that friends and family are more important than looks is also one that the younger members of audience could benefit from.
The supporting cast and dancers from the Hatton School of Performing Arts are outstanding throughout, with the musical sections of the panto a big hit with our youngest two daughters in particular, keeping them dancing and singing throughout.
This is a great afternoon out for all the family and we will certainly be coming back for more next Christmas.
The panto runs from Tuesday December 11 to Tuesday January 1, various performance times.
