“My name is in fact Noel James, although I never pronounce the in fact…” were the first words uttered by Noel James, the headline act at last week’s Laff@theSpa, writes Mike Brown.
What followed was a riotous, confident, surreal and hilarious barrage of witty gags from the experienced Welsh comic which had the large audience rolling in the aisles.
Ranging from physical comedy including inventive ‘impressions’ of Robert De Niro and the Elephant Man, through some quick witted wordplay with a few cheeky Yorkshire accents thrown in for good measure, it capped a great night of comedy at the returning Laff@theSpa night.
Compere Ste Porter kept the audience entertained between acts with a mix of traditional jokes and topical observational comedy, while opening comic Katie Mulgrew charmed the crowd with her gentle storytelling and self-deprecating humour.
But the real standout performer for me was southern deadpan Peter Brush, whose slow build up to quirky one-liners had tears streaming down my cheeks. Comedic magician Paul Thomas brought with him a big bag of tricks and a cheeky persona which went down well.
Head along to the next Laff@theSpa evening on Tuesday, August 2 and see John Newton, Al Rudge and Carl Hutchinson along with compere Paul Savage. Doors are at 7pm - don’t miss out on an evening of peerless entertainment for only £6.
