IT seems the council is changing the summer decoration of South Marine Drive from hanging flower baskets on lamp standards to lighting the fairy lights all day along the road.
This seems to be a waste of precious electricity (as the lamps appear to be tungsten type and not energy-saving) and a loss of the displays of flowers in the hanging baskets, which is a more traditional way of welcoming the summer and the summer visi
tors to our town.
I also wonder whether thought has been given to maintaining the fairy lights which comprise about 2,650 lamps.
At 25 watts each, this is equivalent to 66KW burnt every hour – and we are being urged to stop waste and save the planet by the same council which turns on these lights!
