MY role of East Riding Town Crier allows me, when acting as a Master of Ceremonies, the privilege of attending many events throughout the county and beyond.
One recent event that I was more than delighted to attend was the Freedom Parade in Bridlington in honour of the 2nd Battalion Yorkshire Regiment.

As a former soldier of 22 years' service and having been born in Bridlington, my involvement on thi
s occasion was one of a personal aswell as a professional nature.

The stars of show were, of course, the serving soldiers of the Yorkshire Regiment, but my reason for writing this letter is to also acknowledge the people of Bridlington.

The turn-out of the public to show their support for our hard-working military on a day which threatened a torrential downpour was just fantastic.

The route taken by the Yorkshire Regiment – the only single county named regiment in the British Army – saw appreciative and applauding crowds everywhere.

However, it was standing room only in Prince Street where the salute was taken.

Indeed, the pavements were lined five to six deep from one end of Prince Street to the other, with kids on parents' shoulders and folks hanging out of windows, straining for a better view.

During the speeches from civic and military dignitaries several times the smiling crowds broke into spontaneous applause and I noticed many of the square-jawed soldiers broke into a smile too.

Bridlington not only demonstrated a great pride in our forces but also a pride in itself for the memorable civic reception and the welcome given to them.

It was a day I felt proud to be British and especially proud to say I come from Yorkshire.

Main Street,
