Bridlington Swimming Club had another enjoyable Friendly Gala at Scarborough on Saturday.
The seating area was packed with enthusiastic, noisy spectators. BSC began well and at the end of the first block of relays, the medleys, were just one point behind the leaders with Sarah Holmes, Hannah Spencer, Kimberley Nellist and Catherine Ansell winning the open event.
New to Galas Rebecca Witty, Bethany Bird, Jack Cowell and Joe Irving settled in quickly and all gave creditable performances.
Coach Margaret Greenall uses her knowledge of the swimmers and her skill to pick a team to win events without going under the cut off times. Sometimes swimmers pleasantly surprise her like Daniel Sewell, Tori Dickinson and Hannah Spencer who all won their individual swims by going above expectations so gained first place but were too fast to gain points.
The block of breaststroke relays are unique to Friendly Galas. BSC gained most points out of the 6 competing teams in this section. James Holehouse, Matthew Faulkner, Sam Shepherd, Wayne Oakley, Jason Faulkner and Daniel Sewell won the 6 x 25m event.
In individual races there were several exciting close finishes relying on judges decisions. Two of these went to Jonathan and Catherine Ansell, both being deemed second places in very tight races.
The freestyle winning teams were Philip Ansell, Matthew and Jason Faulkner, Daniel Sewell and Tori Dickinson, Amber Walker, Rianna Manson and Charlotte Hornsey.
There were 12 PBs in the individuals and 27 in the relays. The atmosphere round the pool was great with swimmers encouraging each other and more seasoned swimmers helping the less experienced.
Thank you to all the helpers and to the supportive spectators. An excellent Gala and well done swimmers.
