HORNSEA'S annual Carnival was in full swing this weekend despite fears it could be cancelled due to bad weather.
The celebrations, which started on Friday on the seafront with wing walking and a firework display, and finished on Sunday in Hall Garth Park, were watched by an estimated 30,000 people.

The parade, which started at 12.30pm, was enjoyed by hundreds of carnival-goers, both locals and tourists.

One Hornsea woman ,Elaine Spafford, said: "It's great. There is a lot here, an excellent atmosphere and you can definitely tell a lot of hard work has been put into it."

This year there was plenty to see and do from the good old favourites such as the bands on the hill, arena events and rides to new exciting features such as wood carving.

There was fair trade tasting on one of the stalls, which raised money for MacMillan nurses and Lifestyle, using a tombola, a raffle and a 'guess the name of the bear' game.

Naomi Berry, of Hornsea, who ran the stall, said: "We have already raised £100 for charity and Co-op will match whatever we raise."

Another stall to see huge success within hours of the parade entering the park was Hornsea Sporting AFC, run by Mark Hobson, of Hornsea.

He held a tombola which was wiped out within two hours.

Mr Hobson was delighted, and said: "It's been manic, crazy, people where fighting for tickets. We ran out of prizes within two hours so it was a very successful day, the best we have ever had."

Fears of the carnival being cancelled came from bad weather leading up to the event and the cancellation of the 2007 carnival.

The sun was shining for most of the weekend apart from a downpour late Saturday afternoon but this did not dampen the crowds' spirits - the rides were still going and the bands were still playing.

An enthusiastic Ellie Branch-Evans said: "It's amazing, I love all the things you can see and do. The carnival really brings the community together."

With only 12 members on the carnival committee, all of their hard work really did pay off.

Ruth Skinner, the treasurer, said: "We were delighted with the overall success. We were very lucky with the weather after last year's disaster of having to cancel. I think it is a good family weekend, with something for everyone. I think we covered it all."
