A FANTASTIC turnout at 8am on Sunday gave new Links captain Dave Preston (pictured teeing off) a good start to his year.

The drive in was eventually played three weeks late due to the bad recent weather, with the format of betterball medal the sco
res proved difficult once again with only two scores in the 60s.

The best of 67 came from Matt Whitehead and Frank Wilson who picked up eight shots and dropped three in their winning round.

Second place on nett 69 were Graham Patterson and Paul Martin who, after starting bogey bogey, picked up well with 32 on the front nine. Third place on nett 70 were Andy C Smith and Paul Gilbey whose back nine of 34, helped by a net one on the 14th, kept them ahead of fourth placed Paul Portlock and Taff Davies who also had a nett 70.

The straightest drive went to Matt Whitehead, the longest drive to Guy Newsam, nearest the pin fourth Frank Wilson, seventh James Knowles, 14th Steve Flowerdew and 17th Colin Steptoe.

The captain presented the prizes after play and thanked all the members and the golf club for their support.

The captain’s charity raffle got underway collecting around £50.

Let’s have a good year was Dave’s message and we definitely got off to a good start.

Next week’s competition is the R O’Niel, R Noon, Strathearn and Tindall trophies. These are for the best scores in all three divisions and the best junior.

Book times as normal with all juniors putting their names down with Steve Raybould in the shop.

Alex Belt qualified for the Euro-pro golf tour last week shooting 73+72+71 for joint ninth place at Frilford Heath. He plays his first event next week which will be on Sky TV the week after. Let’s hope he features because he’s had his hair done! Good luck.
